Provo Tabernacle On Fire

Last night our beloved Provo Tabernacle went up in flames. I am in shock as sure we all are.

Here's a video taken by a woman at the scene last night:

Read ksl's breaking news here.

The roof just collapsed and it's not looking good.

Here are what I believe are the best photos we've seen so far. These are from one of my newest Provoan friends Clarrisa Gonzales from the NuSkin building across the street.

Thanks Clarrisa.

I drove by early this morning and downtown was busy with firefighters, spectators with cameras and people crying.

More photos from Luke Hansen here.

There is now a facebook page set up by the Provo Arts Council Remembering the Tabernacle.

Here's my not-at-all-over-dramatic (gasp!) sound bite from ksl.com's Community 'heartbroken' piece:

"I'm really hoping that there is some way to save some part of the history of the place," she said. "This morning, when I saw that it was up in flames, I felt a shock like I would if it was a family member. I think that losing the Provo Tabernacle is like losing a prominent member of our society. It's going to be felt far and wide. It's a huge loss."

8:55pm Went to dinner tonight with the family downtown. Flames were still going strong. As were the crowds. We'll see what tomorrow brings...

Thanks Provo Fire for all you are doing!

I am C. Jane Kendrick and it's a sad day in Provo.

Heart breaking. I've been tuned to KSL all morning. I wondered if you'd say something on here since you're so close. Thanks for daring out into this frigid morning to get photos. Dress warm.

I can't believe it. So many happy memories tied to that place. There will be a big hole in the heart of Provo.

WHAT?!

NO! We used to attend Stake conference in that tabernacle. This makes me sad beyond belief. Words can't express the sorrow I'm feeling right now. I'm taking it kind of personally. And I really hope it was an accident, and not arson, because I would hate to have mean, awful feelings towards anyone during the Christmas season.

Oh how sad! My husbad, Jacob, & I went to the tabernacle for a concert on our first date. :(

This is devastating. The Tabernacle was a city landmark, and a treasure. So, so sad.

My Father-in-law helped fight that fire. He said that the feeling was so somber...all the firemen were just heartbroken and saddened. I have some pictures on my blog, you're welcome to take a look.

So very sad...just heartbreaking.

When I heard the news (via facebook) I was in shock. Immediately I came to your blog because I KNEW you would post. I used to sit on those wooden pews for Stake Conference a decade ago. (*sniff*). So very sad.

There are some close up photos of the damage to the building on the blog address above. You can see the images bigger by clicking on them. Tragic loss for Provo.

What a terrible loss for all of us! We were in shock and tears this morning when we heard about it. So many memories attached to that beautiful historic building. Heartbreaking!

I'm am heartsick over this. I am surprised at how sad it made me feel today. I graduated college and seminary in that building. It's hard to believe it's just a shell. I feel like I need to see it in person to believe it, even though I've seen the photos.

Provo Fire, hat's off to you for working all night, probably with your hearts out on your sleeve, to try and save that building. I'm glad none of the EMS were hurt.

Oh this is such a devastating loss. My heart is hurting as I think of the history that is gone. It is like losing a precious family member and to me it has extra significance as my Great Great Grandfather, William Harrison Folsom, was the architect. Because of that we always called it "ours"! (along with the Manti Temple and SLC Tabernacle, etc). Diane Folsom Packham

I logged in here right after I heard the news, hoping you'd have more info on it-and you do! Thank you! I am genuinely surprised at how sad I feel about this...so many memories at the wonderful Provo Tabernacle.

It is SO sad. I'm really grateful nobody was hurt, but it is still a big loss.

We drove by the Tabernacle last night, and talked about how, when our kids were older, we'd go to the Gloria Concert there, just the two of us. And then to wake up to this news...

I saw it first thing this morning on the news and it did break my heart. My 11 year old woke to find mom in tears. I tried to explain, but how do you explain how a building can be so sentimental to you? Even though I no longer live in Provo, I still will miss the Tabernacle and will recall the joy I experienced there over the years.

I just feel sick.

I asked you on Facebook if you were going to write something. I think I was too in shock this morning to click a link! It IS a sad day. I didn't grow up in Provo but I watched my sweetheart receive his B.S. degree there. I sat in Stake conference there in the early 80's holding my firstborn and watching the sun through the stained glass window.glow golden in her hair. I have felt the tangible vibe of pioneers in that place. My grandfather was a student at BYA in 1905 and attended meetings there. My great-grandparents too. My sister was proposed to on the north lawn (he didn't have a ring so he used an onion ring...then they ate it!) Truly, a family member is gone.

It is so sad and so surreal to see it up close. I visited and took some pictures:
