Kristen & Guy Randle

Hello Provonians,
have you met the Randles?

aren't they perfectly hippie and happy?

If you haven't met them, I would like to introduce you.

Kristen is an award winning young adult author (her Breaking Rank and The Only Alien on the Planet were both ALA Best Books) and Provo blogger in her own right (see this post about her meandering through the Provo's Farmer Market with vivid photos to boot) and Guy is one of Provo's veteran recording studio engineers. Together they have run Rosewood Recording studio for the last 30 years out of their west Provo home. Their client list includes Michael McLean, Afterglow and yes, the Janice Kapp Perry herself.

I have never met the Randles personally, but thanks to their daughter Ginna, I've come to know and appreciate how much they've contributed to the culture of our town. Like Ginna said in an email to me, "They're pretty much pillars of the community."

Thanks for holding us all up Randles!

Nice to meet you.

Hi Courtney: Are there people of color living in Provo? So far you have only shown people who are Caucasian which makes it difficult to relate.
Thank you.

Linda

I love hippies!! They have had it right all along!! I am trying my best to turn from some 'robotic big house...big yard...big SUV middle class American'.....To a "peaceful...simple living....doing what I really love" American. I plan on following their blogs..for some helpful hints in getting there! Thanks C Jane!

As for me I like to relate to people not based on looks - but their fire, personality, and spirit. Why do people care about outward appearances so much. Thank you Courtney for celebrating wonderful and interesting people.

I am a person of color...

Why would showcasing a Caucasian, or a person of color for that matter, be difficult to relate to? CJane is showcasing PEOPLE. Why does skin color make it easier to relate to? People are PEOPLE, despite their skin color. Does your skin color define you? Mine doesn't define me. I am a human being, not a skin color. I relate to people who share my values, experiences, and convictions, not whether they look like me. Why does that even matter? That's so base and inconsequential.

I am rather offended by the question...it seems a little racist. It seems that you can only relate to people that look like you...I consider that offensive. Adding the last sentence really was unnecessary.

Well put Carolyne!

I know the Randles and they are great! They are exactly as seen on Kristen's blog. My husband was the choir teacher at Provo High from 2003 to 2009 and the Randles youngest son was highly involved. Kristen would go on Choir Tour with us and we always had a great time. They are great, good, loving people!!

What an amazing array of comments, c. I'm afraid Lisa may not find the path to peace and love by watching us, though - unless we're hippier than I think we are. And just so that the anonymous person gets it straight, I never hear any Mormons talking about other people being punished by God - if that were a true LDS concept, then I'd be in the corner all the time.

The charm of being part of any community is being connected. If the only "accomplishment" a person has is going on choir tour and having a good time and keeping certain young male people alive in spite of themselves - that is significant beyond expression. A community is a grid of human connection - people who take care of each other. Playing monkey bars on that grid is the greatest pleasure ever. You come away with new friends who are real enough, interesting enough, dear enough to become old ones.

Pillars? Ummm. Probably not. Which is good, because we're sort of cracked and leaning . . .

One more little thing? Carolyne - I like you a lot. (A.men - tell your family hi and make Coach kiss you for me.)

Just wanted to say that I don't think Anonymous is bashing white people - just a little variety would be nice sometime.

I was so happy to see them featured here...because as Ginna said, they ARE pretty much pillars in the community.

I was so excited to read this post today! The Only Alien on the Planet is one of my favorite books of all time...I just finished reading my worn paperback for the hundredth time last week. So fun to read a little more about the Randles.

I know Guy's brother and his wife. I was a bridesmaid at their wedding and I think Ginna was a flower girl. That wasn't in Happy Valley though, it was in The (San Fernando) Valley.

Kristen should get bonus points for being a Provo High choir mom. We were not a quiet or submissive bunch, to say the least :)

I'm going to be real, these are the last kind of people I would expect to find in Provo.

Where were they when I was wallowing in the vanilla-ness that seemed to consume p-town?

They seem really cool, and thanks for the link to her blog!

And to reply to Linda's post: I would like to see that, too. However, I know from being a black woman living in Provo for a short time, that there is very little color there. It's a very, very, very hard place to live if you are not white. I speak from experience. I'm not going to lie here, but there is obviously some diversity. I say, feature some of those people, or do you not know them CJane?
